SKU structure, marketplace rules and inventory best practices for Indian e-commerce sellers.
A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a unique alphanumeric code you assign to each product variant for inventory tracking. Unlike barcodes, SKUs are internal — you define them. They help you identify products instantly, track stock levels and reconcile marketplace reports.
A good structure is: CATEGORY–BRAND–VARIANT–SIZE–COLOUR–SEQUENCE. Example: TSH-NIKE-RND-L-RED-001. Keep it under 20 characters, uppercase, with hyphens or underscores as separators. Each segment should be a consistent abbreviation — never use full words.
Yes. Amazon India requires a Seller SKU for every ASIN listing. Flipkart uses SKU IDs for inventory management. You define these yourself — they don't need to match a barcode. A consistent system makes bulk uploads, returns and inventory reporting much easier.
Stick to uppercase letters (A–Z), digits (0–9), hyphens (-) and underscores (_). Avoid spaces, special characters (*, &, #, @), and accented letters. Most marketplaces reject SKUs with unsupported characters during bulk upload.
Never reuse a SKU. Once a SKU is assigned to a product and sold, reusing it creates inventory and order reconciliation errors. If a product is discontinued, retire the SKU and assign a new one to any replacement product.
All SKU generation happens entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server. Recent SKU history is saved only in your browser's localStorage and never leaves your device.
