Barcode types, GS1 standards, print sizes and best practices for Indian e-commerce sellers.
EAN-13 is the standard for Indian retail. Required by Amazon India, Flipkart, Meesho and most POS systems. Register with GS1 India for a company prefix (starts with 890). For internal SKU tracking, Code 128 requires no registration.
The first 3 digits of an EAN-13 indicate the GS1 Member Organisation. 890 = India (GS1 India). Other common prefixes: 000–039 = USA/Canada, 400–440 = Germany, 880 = South Korea, 690–699 = China. The prefix identifies who issued the company prefix, not where the product was made.
ITF-14 labels shipping cartons containing multiple retail units — a 14-digit code with a leading indicator digit (0–8), followed by the EAN digits of the contained product and a check digit. Required by large retailers (D-Mart, Reliance, Amazon FBA) for distribution centre identification.
GS1 standard 100% magnification = 37.29 mm × 26.26 mm. Minimum allowed is 80% (29.83 mm × 21.01 mm). For packaging, print at 100% or larger. Always test with at least two scanner apps before finalising your print run.
SVG for print, always. Infinitely scalable with no pixelation — what professional printers and design software (Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Canva) expect. PNG 3× works for label printers and digital use but pixelates if scaled further.
All barcodes are generated entirely in your browser using the open-source JsBarcode library. No data is sent to any server. Your barcode values and SKU codes never leave your device. Recent history is stored in your browser's localStorage only.
